Description

We cannot truly understand or appreciate the fragile wonders of our planet without looking to the Amazon Rainforest. It generates around 20% of the world’s oxygen, and approximately 10% of the planet’s fresh water flows from its rivers into the oceans. Home to more than 25,000 plant species, over 4,300 bird species, and nearly 20,000 animal species, the Amazon is one of the richest ecosystems on Earth.

Less than an hour from Cusco, you’ll find yourself within the Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone, located in the Madre de Dios region. This vast protected area is considered one of the most pristine and well-preserved sections of the Amazon rainforest in all of South America.

ITINERARY

DAY 1:- Arrival to Puerto Maldonado and River Trip to the Refugio Amazonas Lodge

Upon your arrival from Lima or Cusco, you will be met by our staff and transferred to the Tambopata River Port in Puerto Maldonado. On the way, you’ll enjoy a brief city tour, visiting some of the main attractions of this Amazonian town.

We will then board a motorized canoe for a two-hour river journey to Refugio Amazonas Lodge. A box lunch will be provided during the trip. Along the way, we will stop briefly at a park ranger station, as we’ll be entering the Tambopata-Candamo National Reserve—a vast protected area covering approximately 1.3 million hectares, making it one of the largest reserves in Peru.

During the river journey, keep an eye out for typical riverbank wildlife, including skimmers, sandpipers, crowned herons, jabiru storks, falcons, as well as various species of kingfishers, swallows, and flycatchers.

Upon arrival at Refugio Amazonas Lodge, you’ll have time to settle into your room and explore the lodge’s facilities. Later, you will receive an informative orientation briefing about the lodge and the surrounding rainforest.

After dinner, we’ll embark on a night boat excursion along the river, searching for caimans along the banks with the help of a powerful spotlight. Spotting these nocturnal reptiles in their natural habitat is a unique Amazon experience.

Return to the Refugio Amazonas Lodge for overnight stay.

Day 2:- Refugio Amazonas Lodge - Tambopata Research Center

We will wake up at dawn for a visit to the Canopy Tower, a 25-meter-high observation platform designed for safe and easy access via internal staircases with railings and resting platforms every two meters. From the top, you’ll enjoy a spectacular view over the treetops and surrounding canopy—an ideal vantage point for spotting canopy-dwelling and high-flying birds such as toucans, parrots, and macaws.

Afterwards, we’ll take a guided walk along the Brazil Nut Trail (Trocha de la Castaña), an old path near Refugio Amazonas Lodge lined with impressive Brazil nut trees that have been sustainably harvested for generations. We’ll visit a traditional shelter used by local Brazil nut collectors during the harvest season (January and February) and learn about this important, sustainable economic activity of the Madre de Dios region.

We’ll return to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, we’ll board our motorized canoe and continue upstream to reach the Tambopata Research Center (TRC). This river journey takes approximately four hours. After about an hour and a half, we’ll stop at the Park Guard Post, marking the transition into the Intangible Zone of the Tambopata National Reserve, a 700,000-hectare protected area. From this point onward, wildlife sightings often increase—you may spot capybaras, river geese, caimans, and macaws.

Upon arrival at the Tambopata Research Center, you’ll have time to settle in and explore the lodge’s facilities, followed by an informative orientation briefing about the center and its surroundings.

In the afternoon, we’ll enjoy a short nature walk along the banks of the Tambopata River, appreciating the stunning Amazonian scenery.

After dinner, scientists will present a lecture about macaws and the ongoing Macaw Project that has been active at the research center for over a decade. You’ll learn about macaw feeding habits, mating behavior, population dynamics, and the conservation challenges facing these iconic birds.

Overnight at Tambopata Research Center.

Day 3:- Tambopata Research Center

At dawn, we will cross the river to visit one of the largest macaw clay licks (colpas) in the world, where hundreds of parrots and macaws gather daily. You may witness between 10 and 12 species from the parrot family, including Red-and-Green Macaws, Blue-and-Yellow Macaws, Scarlet Macaws, Red-bellied Macaws, and Blue-headed Macaws. Other species often seen include Mealy Parrots, Yellow-crowned Parrots, Blue-headed Parrots, Orange-cheeked Parrots, White-bellied Parrots, Dusky-headed Parakeets, White-eyed Parakeets, Cobalt-winged Parakeets, Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlets, and Dusky-billed Parrotlets.

This spectacular natural display continues until a predator, often an eagle, appears—sending the birds into a sudden, vibrant flurry of color and sound as they take flight.

After breakfast, we will explore the Floodplain Forest, characterized by towering ficus, ceiba, and ironwood (shihuahuaco) trees, as well as ponds and natural gullies. While walking, we’ll search for common squirrel monkeys, black-faced capuchins, and spider monkeys, as well as white-lipped and collared peccaries, the rainforest’s wild pig equivalents.

Lunch at Tambopata Research Center.

In the afternoon, we’ll take a short ten-minute boat ride upriver to a small platform by a secluded lake. From here, you’ll be able to quietly observe numerous bird species that inhabit the area. The platform, located in the center of the lake, provides excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.

In the evening, we’ll set out on a night walk through the rainforest, the peak activity time for many mammals—though sightings are often elusive. More commonly, you’ll encounter Amazonian frogs, notable for their unusual shapes, vibrant colors, and fascinating natural behaviors.

Day 4:- Tambopata Research Center

In the morning, you’ll have free time to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Tambopata Research Center. You may choose to explore additional trails, revisit your favorite spots, or simply unwind in the heart of the Amazon.

Before lunch, we will explore the Terra Firme Trail, which leads through a distinct habitat characterized by smaller, slender trees and rolling terrain. This five-kilometer trail often offers sightings of Black-hooded Saddleback Tamarin monkeys, and if we’re lucky, we may spot tapir tracks near the swamp’s edge.

After a short and gentle walk, we’ll return to the center to enjoy lunch.

Later, we’ll embark on a 30-minute walk from the lodge to visit a nearby swamp area, where you’ll find the skeletons of dead Aguaje (Moriche) palm trees. These tree trunks provide ideal nesting sites for Red-bellied Macaws and Blue-and-yellow Macaws. A specially constructed canopy tower offers a close-up view of the macaws as they enter and leave their nests.

Dinner and overnight stay at Tambopata Research Center.

Day 5:- Tambopata Research Center - Refugio Amazonas Lodge

After breakfast, we will depart for Refugio Amazonas Lodge, a journey that will take approximately three hours by boat. A box lunch will be served during the trip.

Upon arrival and after some time to rest, we’ll set out on an excursion to Lake Condenado. We’ll paddle silently across the lake, searching for local wildlife such as the distinctive hoatzin—a prehistoric-looking bird—and caimans resting along the water’s edge. If we’re fortunate, we might catch a rare glimpse of giant river otters (lobos de río), although sightings here are uncommon.

We’ll return to Refugio Amazonas Lodge for dinner.

Afterwards, the lodge staff will present a talk about the Tambopata National Reserve, sharing insights into its conservation challenges, sustainable opportunities, and ongoing protection projects.
