Description

The Tambopata – Candamo National Reserve (TNR), located in southeastern Peru, encompasses 3.7 million acres of pristine Amazonian rainforest. Established in 1990 through collaboration between the national government, local communities, and international conservation organizations, this vast protected area safeguards the entire watersheds of the Tavara and Candamo Rivers, as well as most of the Tambopata River basin.

The reserve’s primary goal is to protect the region’s rich biodiversity while promoting sustainable development and the responsible management of forest resources. Within its boundaries, the TNR conserves ecosystems that range from Andean highlands and cloud forests to the lowland rainforests of the Amazon basin.

The reserve is home to extraordinary wildlife:

  • Over 1,300 bird species, including 32 parrot species (10% of the world’s total),
  • Around 200 species of mammals,
  • 90 species of frogs,
  • 1,200 butterfly species,
  • More than 10,000 plant species.

One of its most famous attractions is the world’s largest known mineral clay lick, where hundreds of parrots and macaws gather daily in a colorful and unforgettable spectacle.

This tour program offers a perfect introduction to the Amazon Rainforest, with activities based at Posada Amazonas Lodge. Guests will enjoy excellent chances to spot jaguars, giant river otters, monkeys, peccaries, and large macaw flocks. The experience includes visiting a canopy observation tower, a parrot clay lick, an oxbow lake, and an ethnobotanical center, providing a balanced combination of wildlife viewing and cultural immersion.

ITINERARY

Day 1:- Arrival in Puerto Maldonado and journey to Posada Amazonas Lodge

Upon your arrival from Lima or Cusco, you’ll be warmly greeted and transferred to the Tambopata River port in Puerto Maldonado. After a brief orientation tour of the town, your Amazon adventure begins with a 2-hour motorized canoe journey along the river toward Posada Amazonas Lodge. Depending on your flight’s arrival time, you’ll either enjoy a boxed lunch during the boat ride or a freshly prepared meal upon reaching the lodge.

As you navigate the river, keep an eye out for typical river and forest-edge bird species, such as:

  • Black Skimmers
  • Pied Lapwings
  • Capped Herons
  • Jabiru Storks
  • Roadside Hawks
  • Various kingfishers, swallows, and flycatchers.

Upon arrival at Posada Amazonas Lodge, you’ll settle into your accommodations and receive a brief orientation about the lodge and its community ecotourism project.

In the afternoon, your first Amazonian adventure awaits: a visit to the 35-meter-high canopy tower, located about a 15-minute walk from the lodge. Built with a secure internal staircase and rest platforms every two meters, the tower offers:

  • Panoramic views of the rainforest canopy and the Tambopata River.
  • Excellent opportunities to spot parrots, toucans, and macaws from above the treetops.

After returning to the lodge, enjoy dinner followed by an informative video presentation about the biodiversity and conservation of the Tambopata rainforest.

Overnight at Posada Amazonas Lodge.

Day 2:- Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake and Posada Amazonas.

Wake up at dawn for a visit to the Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake, one of the highlights of the region. After an early breakfast, you’ll depart from the lodge on a 15-minute boat ride followed by a 30-minute walk through the rainforest to the shores of the lake. From there, embark on a canoe excursion around the calm waters, searching for:

  • Giant River Otters (a resident family of nine lives here),
  • Turtles resting on logs,
  • Hoatzins perched in the foliage,
  • and various wading birds that frequent the lake’s edges.

After this peaceful morning exploration, return to the lodge’s trail network to visit a small parakeet clay lick. On clear days, dozens or even hundreds of:

  • Blue-Headed Parrots,
  • Orange-Cheeked Parrots,
  • Cobalt-Winged Parakeets,
  • and occasionally the rare Rock Parakeet
gather to consume the mineral-rich clay. Their vibrant greens, blues, and oranges create a stunning and lively spectacle that can sometimes last for hours.

Return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest before your afternoon adventure. In the afternoon, visit the community’s ethno-botanical centre, where locals have been preserving and sharing their ancestral knowledge of Amazonian plants for over a decade. Accompanied by a local resident, you’ll walk the surrounding trails, learning how forest resources are used for medicine, construction, food, and crafts.

In the evening, after enjoying dinner and a refreshing happy hour, you’ll have the option to join a guided night walk. Equipped with flashlights, venture into the rainforest to look for:

  • Amphibians like frogs and toads,
  • Nocturnal insects,
  • and, if lucky, some small nocturnal mammals.

Overnight at Posada Amazonas Lodge.

Day 3:- Return to Puerto Maldonado

After an early breakfast, you will board the boat for the return journey to Puerto Maldonado, enjoying the last sights and sounds of the rainforest along the riverbanks. Upon arrival, you will be transferred directly to the airport, in time for your departing flight to Lima or Cusco.
