ITINERARY

Day 1:- Cusco - Pilcopata

Leaving the Inca capital of Cusco, we begin a scenic ascent into the Andes Mountains, passing the ruins of Ninamarca, where ancient chullpas—pre-Inca burial towers built by the Lupacas—stand as silent sentinels of history. The road then winds down to the traditional town of Paucartambo, known for its colonial charm.

Beyond Paucartambo, we ascend into the Puna ecological zone, a stark highland landscape that is home to the elusive vizcacha, a rabbit-like rodent, as well as rare predators like the Andean fox and, with great luck, the puma. Climbing to nearly 3,500 meters, we are met by a wall of dense white cloud, signaling the rich jungle hidden below.

At Tres Cruces, the highest point of the journey, we pause to admire panoramic views of the cloud-covered Eastern Andes—we have officially entered the edge of the Manu National Park, just five hours from Cusco.

With this breathtaking landscape before us, we stop for a picnic lunch, enjoying the serenity of the cloud forest.

After lunch, we descend into the cloud forest, where the misty tree canopy nurtures a vibrant ecosystem of epiphytes, mosses, ferns, and the distinctive highland bamboo (kur-kur). Though it seems remote and inaccessible, this area is a haven for an incredible variety of birds.

We continue to a wildlife observation post, where—with a bit of luck—we’ll witness the fascinating mating dance of Peru’s national bird, the Cock-of-the-Rock, and possibly catch a glimpse of woolly monkeys moving through the treetops.

At approximately 7:00 p.m., we arrive at Pilcopata, where a delicious dinner awaits. After the meal, enjoy the peaceful surroundings before settling in for the night.

Day 2:- Pilcopata - Boca Manu

At daybreak, we continue our journey through the valley toward the river port of Atalaya, located at the headwaters of the Alto Madre de Dios River. From this point onward, access to the lowland jungle must be made by motorized canoes, equipped with powerful outboard engines for navigating the winding Amazonian waterways.

From Atalaya, we enjoy a leisurely downstream journey toward Boca Manu. Along the river, colorful birds such as macaws, raptors, jays, and oropendolas frequently fly overhead, while herons, egrets, and the Amazon kingfisher rest along the banks, providing excellent opportunities for birdwatching.

As we travel, we’ll pass Shintuya, a Dominican mission settlement of Huachipaeri and Amarakaeri people, followed by the native communities of Shipitiari (Machiguenga) and Diamante (Piro).

We will stop briefly along the way to enjoy lunch and, if you wish, take a refreshing dip in the river to cool off from the tropical heat.

Upon arrival at Boca Manu, take time to relax and admire the surrounding lush rainforest. At dusk, we’ll embark on a short jungle walk, increasing our chances of spotting elusive nocturnal wildlife such as the night monkey.

After returning to the lodge, enjoy a well-deserved dinner, before drifting off to sleep to the soothing sounds of the jungle night.

Day 3: Boca Manu - Casa Machiguenga.

After breakfast, we will board our boat and set off toward the heart of the Manu Biosphere Reserve. Along the way, we’ll make a brief stop at the Limonal checkpoint to register and present the necessary permits for entering this protected area.

As we continue our navigation along the river, nature will unfold around us in unpredictable and ever-changing ways. Keep your eyes open for wildlife along the shores and in the treetops, as the Manu rainforest offers countless surprises.

We’ll enjoy lunch on board, surrounded by the serene sounds of the jungle.

In the afternoon, we’ll arrive at Casa Machiguenga Lodge, located deep within the reserve. Here, we will be warmly welcomed by members of the Machiguenga community, who will introduce us to the local native guides. These experienced guides will accompany us in the coming days, sharing their knowledge of the region’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Settle into your accommodations and prepare for an unforgettable Amazonian experience.

Day 4:- Casa Machiguenga

Today, we will embark on an excursion by catamaran on the Salvador Oxbow Lake, quietly navigating its calm waters in search of the elusive giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), one of the Amazon’s most remarkable predators.

Later, we will explore the surrounding primary forest near Casa Machiguenga, where we’ll look for agile spider monkeys (Ateles paniscus) and the characteristic groups of white-lipped peccaries (Tayassu pecari), known for their loud movements through the undergrowth.

After a light dinner, we will set out on a night walk, focused on spotting the black caiman, the largest caiman species in the entire Amazon rainforest—a true apex predator of these waters.

We will spend the night at Casa Machiguenga, surrounded by the natural sounds of the jungle.

Day 5:- Casa Machiguenga – Blanquillo

Early in the morning, we will board our boat and begin our journey toward Blanquillo, a site famous for its impressive Macaw Clay Lick. On the way, we’ll make a brief stop at Limonal Checkpoint to register our exit from the Reserved Zone.

As we navigate down the river, take in the changing landscapes and keep watch for wildlife along the riverbanks.

In the late afternoon, we’ll take a short walk to explore the nearby Blanquillo Oxbow Lake, where we’ll search for caimans lurking along the water’s edge as the forest transitions into night.

We’ll overnight near Blanquillo, preparing for the exciting day ahead.

Day 6:- Blanquillo.

At dawn, we’ll head to the famous Parrot and Macaw Clay Lick in Blanquillo, where you’ll witness the spectacular display of Scarlet Macaws, parrots, and hundreds of smaller parakeets gathering to feed on the mineral-rich clay—a truly unforgettable natural spectacle.

After enjoying this vibrant show, we’ll continue our journey downstream along the Madre de Dios River toward Puerto Maldonado. Along the way, admire the ever-changing scenery, observe wildlife, and pass by small settler villages and artisanal gold mining camps, offering insight into life along the river.

As evening falls, we’ll select a sandy riverbank to set up camp for the night, where we’ll dine and rest surrounded by the sounds of the Amazon.

Day 7:- Laberinto – Puerto Maldonado

In the morning, we will arrive at the small mining village of Laberinto, where our team will be waiting to transfer you by vehicle for approximately 40 miles to the city of Puerto Maldonado.

Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed at the Wasai Maldonado Hotel with a refreshing tropical fruit drink. After a brief orientation about your upcoming adventure to Tambopata, you’ll have free time to relax—whether enjoying the hotel’s swimming pool or exploring the picturesque streets of Puerto Maldonado at your leisure.

Day 8:- Puerto Maldonado -Tambopata

This stage of your journey is filled with adventure, offering excellent chances to encounter wildlife and witness the most breathtaking landscapes of the Tambopata region—including the spectacular Macaw Clay Lick (Collpa) inside Bahuaja-Sonene National Park and the serene Sandoval Lake in the Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone. This program includes immersive walks through the heart of both protected areas.

We’ll embark on a 3 to 4.5-hour motorboat trip along the Tambopata River, heading to the WASAI Tambopata Lodge & Research Center. Along the way, enjoy a box lunch while observing local farms and riverbanks, where you might spot families of capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, and flocks of colorful birds flying overhead.

Upon arrival at the lodge, you’ll receive a warm welcome and settle into your accommodation before enjoying a freshly prepared lunch.

After a short rest, we’ll head out for a brief introductory walk through the nearby forest. Your guide will share insights into the basic principles of ecology and the region’s unique wildlife history.

Returning to the lodge for dinner, we’ll later venture into the forest for a night walk—a chance to discover the vibrant nocturnal life of the Amazon, including colorful frogs, diverse insects, and perhaps a glimpse of nocturnal mammals. All around, the incredible sounds of the jungle will accompany your first night deep in the Amazon.

Overnight at WASAI Tambopata Lodge & Research Center.

Day 9:- Tambopata

We’ll wake early at 5:00 a.m. to begin an exciting journey upriver along the Tambopata River, traveling for approximately 1.5 hours toward the heart of the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park. Along the way, admire a magical Amazonian sunrise, with the chance to spot wildlife such as capybaras, tapirs, deer, and—if lucky—even a jaguar in the surrounding virgin forest.

Upon arrival, from a safe and respectful distance, we’ll witness one of the most incredible spectacles of the rainforest: hundreds of parrots, parakeets, and macaws of various species gathering at the clay lick, feeding on mineral-rich soils essential to their diet. While observing this colorful and noisy gathering, we’ll enjoy a hot drink and a snack.

Later, we’ll take a short walk through the area, keeping an eye out for monkeys and other animals before returning to the lodge for a late breakfast and a period of rest.

After lunch, we’ll venture deeper into the lush jungle on a special wildlife trail, moving through the habitat of peccaries, deer, and other forest dwellers. We may spot tracks, hear rustling movements, or encounter troops of monkeys as they search for food among the treetops.

If time allows, you’ll have the chance to cool off and relax with a refreshing swim at the Cat Cascade.

Following dinner, you may choose between another night excursion, searching for caimans along the riverbanks, or simply relaxing at the lodge, surrounded by the enchanting nocturnal sounds of the rainforest.

Overnight at WASAI Tambopata Lodge.

Day 10:- Tambopata – Puerto Maldonado

After breakfast, we’ll take a boat trip back to WASAI Maldonado Lodge in Puerto Maldonado, where you can relax in your comfortable bungalow and enjoy a delicious lunch.

In the afternoon, we’ll set off for a short 20-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to reach the starting point of the Lake Sandoval trail. A 5 km hike through the tropical rainforest will lead us to the shores of Lake Sandoval, one of the most beautiful lakes in the region.

Once at the lake, we’ll board a wooden canoe to explore its calm waters. As we paddle, you’ll admire the stunning scenery and watch for kingfishers, herons, hoatzins (unique prehistoric-looking birds), monkeys, and—with a little luck—the resident giant river otters. You’ll also have the opportunity to try piranha fishing and, if you wish, swim in the lake.

As the day comes to an end, prepare to witness a spectacular Amazonian sunset before we begin the return hike to the Madre de Dios River and transfer back to Puerto Maldonado.

At WASAI Maldonado Lodge, after dinner, you’ll have free time to relax at the pool and waterfall, explore the city by foot or bike, or simply enjoy the laid-back nightlife of this welcoming Amazonian town.
