Description

The Tambopata Reserved Zone is a dynamic tropical frontier, renowned as one of the most biologically diverse environments on Earth. Located at the confluence of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata Rivers, this region thrives on activities such as gold mining, Brazil nut harvesting, timber extraction, agriculture, and, increasingly, ecotourism.

Extensive research conducted over the past two decades has confirmed that Tambopata holds some of the world’s highest records of wildlife diversity. With over 595 bird species, enthusiasts have identified more than 100 species in a single day. The area is also home to over 1,200 species of butterflies and a wide range of other fauna. This exceptional biodiversity is a result of its unique geographic location, where the lowland Amazon rainforest converges with three other ecosystems: Andean foothills, dry forests, and Pampas savannahs. At least seven distinct forest types can be found within the Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone.

Recognizing its ecological value, the Peruvian Government designated this region as a Reserved Zone in 1977, prohibiting hunting and timber extraction. Later, in 1990, the Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone was officially established, covering over 1.4 million hectares, and complemented by the creation of the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park in 1996.

ITINERARY

Day 1:-Arrival in Puerto Maldonado and journey to Amazonas Lodge

Arrival and Transfer to Posada Amazonas Lodge

Upon arrival from Lima or Cusco, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to the Tambopata River Port in Puerto Maldonado. Known as a bustling tropical frontier town, Puerto Maldonado is located at the confluence of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata Rivers. This dynamic region thrives on gold mining, Brazil nut harvesting, timber extraction, agriculture, and increasingly, ecotourism.

After a brief overview of the town, we will begin our adventure with a 1-hour road journey via Infierno Road, followed by a 30-minute motorized canoe ride to Posada Amazonas Lodge. Depending on your arrival time, you will enjoy a boxed lunch on board or lunch upon arrival at the lodge.

During the river journey, keep your eyes open for bird species commonly seen along the riverbanks and forest edges, such as:

  • Black Skimmers
  • Pied Lapwings
  • Capped Herons
  • Jabiru Storks
  • Roadside Hawks
  • Various species of kingfishers, swallows, and flycatchers

Upon arrival at Posada Amazonas Lodge, a comfortable yet eco-conscious 24-room property co-owned by Rainforest Expeditions and the Local Community of Infierno, you’ll have time to unpack and relax.

You’ll then receive a short orientation and a comprehensive briefing on the lodge and its community-based ecotourism project before beginning your first activity: the canopy tower visit. Located a 15-minute walk from the lodge, this 35-meter scaffolding tower allows safe and easy ascent via internal staircases with resting platforms every two meters.

From the top, enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding forest and river, and spot canopy-dwelling species such as:

  • Parrots
  • Toucans
  • Macaws

After dinner, a documentary video about the Tambopata rainforest will be presented, enriching your understanding of this extraordinary ecosystem.

Day 2:- Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake and Amazonas Lodge

We’ll begin the day at dawn, setting out for an early morning visit to the beautiful Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake. After a hearty breakfast, we will depart from Posada Amazonas Lodge, taking a 15-minute boat ride followed by a 30-minute walk to reach the lake’s shore.

Here, a peaceful canoe ride will allow us to explore the lake’s calm waters in search of:

  • Giant River Otters, part of a resident family of nine
  • Turtles
  • The prehistoric-looking Hoatzin
  • A variety of wading birds

Following this unforgettable wildlife experience, we will return to the lodge for lunch and some rest before the afternoon’s activity.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit the Community Ethnobotanical Center, a unique project where local residents have been documenting and preserving traditional knowledge of medicinal plants for over a decade. Accompanied by a community member, we’ll explore the surrounding trails, learning about the uses of forest resources in:

  • Natural medicine
  • Construction
  • Food
  • Fibers and handicrafts

After this immersive cultural experience, we’ll return to Posada Amazonas Lodge for dinner and overnight stay. Later in the evening, you’ll have the option to join a night walk, a guided excursion perfect for discovering the Amazon’s amphibians and fascinating nocturnal insects.

Day 3:- Visit to the Parrots and Macaws Clay-lick (Collpa)

After an early breakfast, we will begin the day with a visit to a nearby clay lick, located just a 10-minute walk from Posada Amazonas Lodge, close to the river. This clay lick attracts a different variety of parrots compared to the forest clay licks you’ll see later in the day. Expect to observe:

  • Large Macaws, such as the Red-and-Green Macaw
  • Mealy and Yellow-Crowned Amazons
  • Smaller parrots and parakeets

From the comfort of a purpose-built blind (hide) near the lick, even amateur photographers will have excellent opportunities to capture vivid images of these colorful species.

In addition to the clay lick activity, this morning offers the chance to spot other spectacular wildlife, including Scarlet Macaws, Blue-and-Gold Macaws, and various forest-edge bird species.

When bird activity at the first clay lick subsides, we’ll continue to a small parakeet clay lick, about a 45-minute walk away. Here, dozens—sometimes hundreds—of parrots gather, including:

  • Blue-Headed Parrots
  • Orange-Cheeked Parrots
  • Cobalt-Winged Parakeets
  • Occasionally, the rare Rock Parakeet

This vibrant gathering is a feast of colors and sounds, as the parrots compete for access to the mineral-rich clay, sometimes for hours.

Following lunch back at the lodge, we will embark on a guided walk through the primary rainforest, accompanied by a local community member and our naturalist guide. Together, they will share insights into rainforest ecology and natural history, blending local knowledge with scientific understanding to enrich your experience.

Return to Posada Amazonas Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4:- Return to Puerto Maldonado

After an early breakfast, we will depart by motorized canoe, navigating the Tambopata River back to the city of Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival, we will proceed directly to the airport, arriving in time for your departure flight to Lima or Cusco.
