ITINERARY

DAY 01: CUSCO – CACHORA – CAPULICHAYOC – CHIKISCA

At 5:00 a.m., we will pick you up from your hotel lobby in Cusco and depart in our private van towards the town of San Pedro de Cachora (2,800 m / 9,186 ft), a journey of approximately 3 hours. Upon arrival, you’ll have free time to enjoy breakfast. Here, we will meet the rest of our trekking team: the cook, muleteers, and their horses.

We will then begin our trekking adventure, which will take approximately 6 to 7 hours. Along the trail, you will observe a variety of landscapes corresponding to different climate zones, including the impressive snow-capped peaks of Pedrayoc. During the hike, your professional guide will share information about the local flora and fauna.

Our first major stop is at the Capuliyoc Viewpoint (Mirador Capuliyoc), from where we will enjoy panoramic views of the Apurímac Canyon, considered one of the deepest canyons in the world, with the majestic Apurímac River flowing at its base. From this point, you can also catch your first glimpse of the enigmatic Choquequirao archaeological complex. Here, we will enjoy our first lunch.

After lunch, we’ll descend for approximately 3 hours to reach Chiquisca (1,800 m / 5,905 ft), where our first campsite will be set up. You will spend the night surrounded by a stunning landscape near the Apurímac Canyon.

  • Estimated hiking time: 6 to 7 hours
  • Total distance: 15 km
  • Campsite altitude: 1,800 meters / 5,905 feet above sea level

DAY 02: CHIQUISCA – MARAMPATA- CHOQUEQUIRAO.

After a good breakfast, we will begin our uphill trek, ascending for approximately 4 to 5 hours towards Marampata (2,950 m / 9,678 ft), where we will stop for lunch and set up camp. From this location, we will enjoy spectacular views of the Apurímac Canyon and the Apurímac River.

In the afternoon, we will embark on a fully guided tour of Choquequirao, known as the “Cradle of Gold” and considered the sister city of Machu Picchu due to its remarkable similarities. While Machu Picchu towers above the Urubamba Canyon, Choquequirao rises 1,500 meters above the Apurímac Canyon. Both sites share the same latitude and were major urban centers during the Inca period.

Choquequirao spans over 8 hectares, yet only one-third of the complex has been excavated so far. Archaeological work continues daily, revealing new and fascinating discoveries. During the visit, your guide will explain the three distinct levels of the site:

  • The urban sector,
  • The agricultural terraces,
  • And the religious sector.

Additionally, you may have the opportunity to spot the majestic Andean Condor soaring above the canyon.

After exploring this impressive Inca city, we will return to our camp at Marampata, where we will enjoy tea time and a delicious dinner.

  • Estimated hiking time: 8 to 9 hours (including the guided visit to Choquequirao)
  • Total distance: 17 km
  • Campsite altitude: 2,950 meters / 9,678 feet above sea level

DAY 03: MARAMPATA – CHIQUISCA

At dawn, you’ll have the chance to enjoy a beautiful sunrise over the Inca ruins and our camp. After a hearty breakfast, we will begin our descent, retracing the same route taken on the way up, heading back towards Chiquisca.

Along the way, we will stop for lunch at Rosalina Beach, near the Apurímac River, where you can relax before continuing the hike.

After lunch, we will ascend for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours until reaching our campsite in Chiquisca, where we will spend the night surrounded by the impressive landscapes of the canyon.

  • Estimated hiking time: 5 to 6 hours
  • Total distance: 12 km
  • Campsite altitude: 1,800 meters / 5,905 feet above sea level

Let me know if you’d like to continue refining the next day.

DAY 04: CHIQUISCA – CACHORA – CUSCO.

This day, we will wake up very early, around 6:00 a.m., and enjoy breakfast while admiring the first rays of sunlight illuminating the Apurímac Canyon. After breakfast, we begin the final stretch of the trek, hiking back towards Cachora. The hike will take approximately 5 to 7 hours, depending on your physical condition and pace.

Midway, we will stop for lunch at Capulichayoq, with beautiful views of the canyon as a backdrop.
